Hunger Walk and 5K on May 29 raises money for Freestore Foodbank

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, Tri-State residents will fight hunger in our community by participating in the Freestore Foodbank's 14th Annual Hunger Walk and 5K Run presented by Kraft Heinz.

The event provides the Freestore Foodbank's 350 community partner agencies - including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, eldercare and childcare facilities, community centers, residential programs and other agencies - with the opportunity to raise money to supplement their food operations. Community partner agencies recruit teams and raise money through pledges of support from their communities. All of the money raised is used toward the agencies' food distribution costs.

"Hunger affects people you see every day - the cashier at the grocery store, a child in your son or daughter's class, the senior down the street who requires expensive medications," said Kurt Reiber, President and CEO of the Freestore Foodbank. "The Hunger Walk gives us the opportunity to recognize our community partners who help us distribute more than 23 million meals each year; and gives the community the chance to support these organizations located in their own neighborhoods."

Since its inception in 2004, the Hunger Walk and 5K Run has raised more than $1,800,000, the equivalent of 5,400,000 meals, for Freestore Foodbank community partners serving 20 counties in Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana. The 3.1-mile walk and run will begin at The Banks.
