Health Alert: App revelation on tracking food

Updated: Thursday, April 3 2014, 04:34 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Your smart phone, or an app that helps you track your eating, could hold the secret to help you drop pounds.

Its hard to believe that a small step could make a really big difference in weight loss.  But this new report found those who recorded just 34 words a day about what they ate lost far more weight than those who did not.  We stopped out at the Metabolic Diseases Institute Thursday to tell you more about this research.

Researchers in this report found if you could record just what you ate on paper or even use one of the apps on your phone, it made a difference.

Dr. Randy Seely explains why this works, "Self monitoring is a way to help you achieve goals, and even minor amounts of self monitoring, writing down what you are eating, helps you understand what you are eating and how it relates to your other kinds of behaviors."

Now while you can record just a few words each day the study did find those who wrote the most  lost the most.  This study found they lost about 12 percent more weight than those who wrote the least when they compared the two groups.
