Health Alert: FDA Says Trans Fats Must Be Phased Out of Food

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A major decision by the Food and Drug Administration could change many of the things you eat, especially junk food.

The FDA announced today it will require the food industry to gradually phase out trans fats. 

Experts say the fats are a threat to your health and getting rid of them could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths each year.  Local 12 medical reporter Liz Bonis shows us what that is likely to mean for the food you eat.

The problem with trans fat is that it's fat usually found in fried foods and baked goods where no amount of it is really considered good for the body.  Throughout the years we've seen fast food places and many restaurants and bakeries advertise that they are going trans fat free, which means they change the kind of fat they use in cooking and baking.

Right now the FDA is not saying how soon it will ask to phase this out but they are going to collect information or comments as they put it, for the next two months before they put a deadline on it.  Now trans fat is fat that when heated sort of changes shape and your body can't handle or filter out what it becomes so it ends up collecting in the body and being bad for your heart.

Now because it's in a lot of foods still even in small amounts you probably won't see a big difference for quite a while.  But what this means is that many companies such as those that make processed foods, baked goods and even microwave popcorn will have to reformulate recipes. 

While that might alter taste it also could alter cost because when you have to develop a newer recipe and ingredient list it takes time and it cost money which means some of that cost could be passed on to you.

Keep in mind it's like when we started adding vitamins to food it takes time to see health problems decrease.  But it does make a difference in our long-term good health.
