Health Alert: Lower your stroke risk

ANDERSON, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- A few simple steps can lower your risk of having a stroke, and a new study says younger people may really benefit from taking these steps.

This report from the Journal of American Medical Association had good news about strokes. They found the number of those over the age of 55 who are dying from strokes or complications are down, but younger people having strokes is on the rise.

For younger people to lower their risk of stroke, there are a few steps you can follow.

First off, you need to drop your blood pressure to normal levels, which are generally 120/70. You also may need to drop five pounds if you are above the ideal body weight.

If you're diabetic, you need to keep blood sugar levels normal, and if you smoke, quitting lessens your risk.

All of these things can make a difference when it comes to reducing stroke risk, and remember: with a stroke, you can live disabled. Something that's not just hard on you, but your family and loved ones as well.
