Health Alert: Mediterranean Diet

Updated: Tuesday, July 29 2014, 04:49 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A report released from Consumer Reports on Health explained why the Mediterranean diet might be a perfect pairing of nutrients for the body.

It has been known for a while that the Greek diet is good for a person's head and heart.  It appeared to help lower the risk of a heart attack and helped reduce odds for early Alzheimer's and dementia, or memory loss.

Researchers in the study found that it was mainly the abundance of olive oil that made it so good for the heart and the head.  It appeared that the olive oil combined with another nutrient mainly found in the vegetables in the diet such as spinach.  When this happened it inhibited an enzyme in the body that helps boost blood vessel width.  The blood vessels stayed wide which helped blood flow to both the heart and the head.

That may explain how it lowered risk and why it was a great diet to reduce both of these health problems.
