Health Alert: New Year Resolutions Start with Screenings

Updated: Wednesday, January 1 2014, 05:17 PM EST
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A survey just released this new year says about four in ten of us will make a New Year's resolution for better health this year, but less than one in ten of us will keep it.

Which is why when we asked Mike Shroder and Patty Stump of Mason what they were making for New Year's resolutions they responded, "I don't do that!"

But if you are choosing to make a New Year's resolution this year health care providers have some important advice.  They say a lot of what you can do to improve your health has to do with simply what you know.

Dr. Elizabeth Shaughnessy, a surgical oncologist says, "Do all the appropriate doctor's appointments.  Make them ahead of time so they fit in your schedule."

Doctor Shaughnessy says do not underestimate how important it is to see your primary care provider for everything from routine blood pressure testing to blood work for cholesterol and thyroid.  It can help you protect against serious health risks long term.

As a cancer specialist she also has an important reminder for screening tests that target women's health concerns.

"With regards to women and mammography, and for cervical cancer screening get your mammogram once a year and get a breast exam because screening is both of those, and make sure you get appropriate pap tests every two years."Health Alert: New Year Resolutions Start with Screenings
