Health Alert: Nuts, beans keep heart young

Updated: Thursday, August 14 2014, 04:55 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The secret to eternal youth, at least for your heart, might be that you simply need to swap your snack food -- or maybe even add a few foods to your dinner menu.

Nut-- especially just about every kind of tree nut-- may hold the secret to eternal youth. According to a review of multiple studies in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, those who ate more almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts reduced the risk of dying of heart disease by 24-percent and type 2 diabetes by 13-percent.

If nuts aren’t your thing, you can also get some of the same results by eating foods in the nut family-- such as beans and legumes.

Those who ate beans, peas and tofu (which is made from soybeans) on a regular basis dropped heart disease risk about 14-percent. Consumer reports on health says you need about a half a cup of beans or these other foods.
