Health Alert: Pizza Study

Updated: Thursday, February 13 2014, 05:14 PM EST
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- This study really confirms one more element of why pizza is good for you.

We've known it has lycopene in the tomato sauce that may help fight disease and the lycopene is absorbed well with a little bit of oil or fat that's on pizza.  Now this study says pizza may actually help you fight the flu.

We stopped out at Bethesda North Hospital Thursday to tell you more about it.  The study is published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology.  Researchers in this study found that it’s the seasoning that is good for you this time, the oregano.  In it, there is a nutrient called carvacrol, it appears to work against norovirus.  That's the virus that gives you symptoms like a bad flu that spreads rapidly on cruise ships.

This research found it appears to break down the tough layer of proteins surrounding the virus.  So far these are lab studies and we don't know how much it would take to have this affect in people.  But either way, get it on pizza, pasta or whatever you enjoy and it may be good for your health.Health Alert: Pizza Study
