Health Alert: Sleep for health

Updated: Monday, June 9 2014, 04:54 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Want to improve your health?  Spend more time in bed!

Next time you see your doctor don't be surprised if your prescription for good health has to do with getting more sleep!  We all would like to sleep our way to better health and one study found you can.  Local 12 stopped out at the Tri-State Cancer Institute to find out more about it.

It appears sleep may be as good as medication for fighting off some diseases.  Researchers found that when they replaced sedentary activity with anything, including more sleep, they were able to show improvements in markers which fight off heart disease and a whole lot more.  They look at those who had sit time and simply even replaced it with sleep.

In the Journal of Epidemiology they found it helped keep the heart in top form.  They also found it improved something called your insulin levels.  This can even improve blood sugars and diabetes.

Don't underestimate just how little it takes to make a difference.  An extra 30 minutes can be really good for improving health.
