Health Alert: Vitamin D may protect against Parkinsons

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The "sunshine vitamin" may be beneficial for your mood and your brain.

You have likely been told by your women's health provider that you need vitamin D for a lot of reasons including strong bones.  But this report found it may also be good for brain.  Scientists found that the brain may have certain receptors in it and we stopped out at Samaritan OB-GYN to tell you more about it.
Researchers say these receptors need this to stay strong and that could make a difference reducing memory problems in the future as well as brain diseases such as Parkinson's Disease.  They don't know why this is true and it may not be cause and effect, but those who get more do seem to fight off these brain diseases.
You need to get three a day: dairy, milk, cheese or yogurt to get enough.  But if you don't you need to ask your doctor about vitamin D testing.  We do live in a climate where you don't get a lot of sunshine, so it's easier to have lower levels than what the brain and body need.
