Health Alert: Walking off waist weight

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A walking program this spring could put you on a path to lowering the risk of dying from breast cancer. 

There is lots of evidence now that walking is good for your body for a lot of reasons.  Those who walk can ease depression, better manage stress, and drop weight if you also cut back on food intake.  This new study published in the online journal Plos One, found that those who walk also cut breast cancer risk and it doesn't take very long to do that.  We are in Mount Auburn Thursday to tell you more about it.
Researchers found four and three quarters miles is all it takes per week to cut the risk of dying from breast cancer by up to 42 percent.  Nobody is sure exactly why this is true.  We do know that walking does tend to work against waist weight. 

"Waist weight" around the waist does tend to lend to possible hormone changes in the body.  But either way for a lot of reasons, they found just under five miles a week is all it takes!  This was for brisk walking or jogging.  If you wan to go a bit slower then seven miles a week appears to work just as well for this reduced risk.
