Health Alert: Walking and texting

Updated: Thursday, May 1 2014, 05:36 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The latest danger with your cell phone may have to do with your balance.

We've heard a lot about the dangers of texting and driving, this report found there's another danger to texting and walking.  Local 12 stopped out at the University if Cincinnati Thursday to tell you more about this research, it's the subject of UC's recent Health Line and published in PLOS.

Researchers from  the  University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Environmental Health Department say this study looked at those who had cell phones.  Subjects were put into three different groups, a total of 26  people, one group walked without a phone, a second read a text on a phone while walking and a third composed a simple text on a phone.  They found the group reading a text deviated from walking in a strait line and the group that composed a text deviated even more.  What they especially found is that your gait, or balance, changes.  That can up the odds of falls.  Experts suggest all of us keep our heads up and our phones down.  While driving of course but also while walking.
