Health Alert: Water births

Updated: Tuesday, March 25 2014, 04:44 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The American Academy of Pediatrics has just released a new reports which says giving birth in water has no health benefit to the baby.

Because of this finding new recommendations are being issued on water births.  The process involves giving birth in a tub of warm water.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says this technique may provide some benefit to a woman in the early stages of labor, but does not provide health benefits for the baby.

Women's health specialists at the Cleveland Clinic, which also supplied video of a water birth tub, say that until we can prove that water births are safe it may be best to only use this technique in the first stage of labor.

Providers say getting into a birthing pool could help mom initially with some decreased pain and shorter labor.  But delivering the baby in the water has no proven benefits to the baby and may have serious and sometimes fatal health risks.

According to Cleveland Clinic experts, researchers concluded underwater births should be considered an experimental procedure and not performed unless part of an appropriately designed study.

For those  considering a water birth, they suggest women choose a center where strict protocols and guidelines are in place for delivery.  And that moms realize at any point a plan may need to be changed if it's best for mom and baby,

The Journal Pediatrics on-line has published this complete list of new recommendations.
