Health Alert: Watermelon could be summer super-food post workout

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A new report said a summer super-food may have big benefits for your body after a workout.
 
Red foods have lycopene and watermelon has that.  Now a new study showed it may have another nutrient which gives the body benefit. Watermelon may have a nutrient in it that made a difference for those who are active.  Registered dietitians in Eating Well said watermelon has what's called "citruiline."  It's a compound that appeared to help people work out more intensely and sped up recovery time.

When people ate watermelon or got two cups of watermelon juice before a workout they found their muscles were less sore compared to when they were given a placebo drink that looked and tasted like watermelon juice.

This was a small study and more research will be needed.  People also drink watermelon juice for vitamin C and lycopene; also for cancer fighting.
