Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio rank near bottom in health report

Updated: Wednesday, December 11 2013, 10:03 AM EST
UNDATED (WKRC) -- The new America's Health Rankings finds Kentucky near the bottom, Ohio and Indiana aren't far behind. The study considers factors including smoking, physical activity and obesity.

Kentucky ranked 45th this year, when compared with other states. Indiana is ranked 41st and Ohio comes in at 40.

Kentucky is challenged by having the highest smoking rate in the country, cancer deaths, preventable hospitalizations, and poor mental and physical health days. According to the report, the Commonwealth does have some strengths including low violent crime rate, low prevalence of infectious diseases and low binge drinking rates.

The report says Ohio's challenges are a high rate of diabetes, too many preventable hospitalizations and air pollution. It does say Ohio's residents have a high rate of primary care physicians, low number of uninsured residents and a high rate of high school graduates.

Indiana is also dealing with a high number of smokers, air pollution and number of children needing immunized. Residents do have a low number of infectious diseases and a small disparity in health status by education.

Hawaii received the top ranking, followed by Vermont. Mississippi was at the bottom with Arkansas ranked 49.

America’s Health Rankings is published jointly by United Health Foundation, American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention.
