Kids Mimic Mom's Habits

Updated: Thursday, September 5 2013, 04:44 PM EDT
A new report says pre-schoolers mimic mom when it comes to diet and exercise.
Medical Reporter Liz Bonis tells us about it in today's health alert.

You probably know that children mirror what they see, but this study found what mom eats, and how much activity she does, plays a critical role in children who are in preschool.

We stopped out at St. Elizabeth Women's Wellness Center to tell you more about this research published in the Journal Obesity.

Researchers studied information from 190 kids, who were ages two to five, and had overweight or obese moms. They found, when they collected information on kid’s food intake, kids ate what mom ate. They also had the kids wear accelerometers, which measure activity, and found, if mom stayed active, so did the kids.
Seems like it would be obvious, but it really shows, if we have concerns about what kids are eating, or their activity levels, we have to change what we eat and how much we exercise, if the kids are watching our daily habits.
