Northern Kentucky Expands Dental Care

Updated: Thursday, August 8 2013, 04:51 PM EDT
There is a big push today by the Northern Kentucky Health Department to help kids get better dental care.
Local 12's Liz Bonis tells us about it in today's Health Alert.
That push comes from recent research which shows the need for better dental care in Northern Kentucky continues to be great.

Jim Schwab, The Health Foundation:
"We know that only 56 percent of Northern Kentucky visited a dentist compared to 70 percent nationally, secondly we know that more than half of people in Northern Kentucky have no dental insurance. >

So, several care providers held a news conference today at the Healthpoint offices in Covington to launch an expansion of healthy smiles for our kids.
It's a partnership that promotes dental education, prevention and treatment, especially in schools.

Chris Goddard, Healthpoint Family Care:
"Healthpoint has a school based dental program  that we have a team of dental providers and support staff, and six portable dental chairs that we take into the various schools in Northern Kentucky."

"This partnership is designed to bring several agencies together, and while it focuses on children, it has important message for all of us, even as we become adults."

That message, kids mirror what mom and dad do.  When it comes to taking care of teeth, and even simple things such as fluoride treatment can help prevent permanent tooth loss when kids grow up.
