Plant-Based Diet

Updated: Friday, August 16 2013, 02:27 PM EDT
Yet another report suggests we back off the burgers, unless they are veggie burgers, of course.

Medical reporter Liz Bonis has details of some new research which explains why in today's Health Alert.

This study found a plant-based diet, which means mainly fruits and vegetables, can make a big difference in how long, and how well you live.

We stopped out at TriHealth's Creekside Café at Bethesda North Hospital to tell you more about it.

In the journal of the American Medical Association researcher analyzed the diets of 73 thousand people. They put them into five categories. Some ate only plant foods, some added fish or eggs or cheese, but no matter which plant-based diet they chose, researchers found vegetarians had a 12 percent lower risk of all cause mortality, compared to those who didn't eat a plant-based diet.

You don't have to go total vegan, but you may just want to add a few more, five to nine is the minimum, which forces a lot of other stuff off your plate.
