Ask the Expert: Posture Workout

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- There may be another hidden health hazard to our  high tech lifestyle, poor posture.
Medical reporter Liz Bonis "Asks the Experts" at TriHealth how to fix it.  From cell phone neck to long hours hunched over the computer, it's pretty clear our posture is paying the price according to fitness experts.

Don Gallucci said, "I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are unaware.  I think as the day goes on, those muscles that typically would be stable or holding us upright are now weak, atrophied, de-conditioned."

Don Gallucci is a personal trainer who says  if you pay attention and  do things starting with a single leg stand it forces you to practice the three steps to better posture, core strength, improving balance, and better breathing.
Whitney Mueller say she notices she's not always doing these things when she starts to slouch.

Whitney Mueller told Liz Bonis, "Oh yeah, I notice moving myself, moving my shoulders in all the time."

Railings where you work or live can also help you with exercises that improve posture.  It's suggested you start with sets of ten while you breath.  Some of the major core muscles involve breathing and if you are not breathing you are not going to engage those muscles.

Don suggests resistance bands as well to build core and upper body strength.  You can use them around just about any railing at work or home.  He says it's important to note that you don't just want to do these posture exercises.  You still need to do some cardio and aerobic exercise to continue to improve that core strength.  If you notice when you walk, run or use the elliptical you use that core strength or center area and you continue to breath.  All are very important elements for posture.

If someone is generally just de-conditioned those muscles can become more and more de-conditioned as they keep being inactive and that's not good.  So to sum it up, posture positioning requires aerobic exercise with strength training with better balance and breathing!
