Medical Edge: Cardiac yoga could benefit heart

Updated: Thursday, May 22 2014, 08:32 PM EDT
ANDERSON, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- You've probably heard of cardiac rehab after having a heart attack, but at the Mercy HealthPlex in Anderson, the prescription now includes cardiac yoga.

After suffering a small heart attack in June 2013, Barry Metzger realized he needed something to help reduce stress and learn how to relax.

He signed up for cardiac yoga at the HealthPlex.

Cindy Ackerman is the instructor for the cardiac yoga classes. She says the program is designed specifically for cardiac patients.

The yoga involves breathing, warm-up exercises, stretching, yoga poses and relaxations. It is also partly a support group.

The team is careful to stress that the yoga is not a replacement for cardiac rehab and cardiovascular exercise, but they say when someone has a heart event, there are a lot of emotions that follow like anger and depression.  Cardiac yoga is designed to relieve those feelings.Medical Edge: Cardiac yoga could benefit heart
