Medical Edge: What is Going Around

Updated: Tuesday, February 4 2014, 09:44 PM EST
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A stomach thing going around hit Emily Gresham Wherles' twin daughters, Madeline and Charlotte, recently in spite of the fact that mom did everything right to try and shut it down.

"We had the vomiting bug that was going around last week, it started with my daughters Thursday night and then spread to the adults by Friday."

You see in addition to causing major traffic headaches on the roads, power outages, and plenty of broken bones from slips and falls; now there is something else we might be able to credit the weather.  The fact that more of us are getting or staying ill these days.

You see weather keeps us indoors, which means germs can spread more easily, and that keeps things such as the flu and the stomach bug going around.  Nationally flu and other viruses are still circulating.  The big concern right now is that they are seeing more people with the H1N1 strain of the virus.

The good news is if you got a flu shot you are protected against this strain.  The bad news is it's hitting an unusual age group especially hard.

"Like 30's, 40's, 50's with severe illness.  Usually you see the see the severe illness in the very very young and the very old, but we are seeing it more in that parent and young grandparent age."

So what should you do if the cold weather has you stuck inside with someone who is sick?

Dr. Chad Hatfield of Tri-State Gastroenterology said, "If someone is around you that has the stomach bug, make sure to keep a safe distance, and continue to wash your hands, and practice good hygiene."

The flu is trending down right now in southern states and experts do hope our area will soon follow. Medical Edge: What is Going Around
