Medical Edge: Gorilla Run

Updated: Thursday, March 27 2014, 05:22 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- It's hard to imagine a world without fascinating creatures like monkeys, but primate curator Ron Evans says if we don't all do our part that could happen.

Evans works at the Cincinnati Zoo and said, "Most great apes species are critically endangered around the world."

So he's a big fan of the annual "Gorilla Run" each year which raises money for the Gorilla Conservation Fund.

Frank Keesling, MTN of the Gorilla Conservation Fund said, "It's a conservation effort for the MTN gorillas in Central Africa and Rowanda and Uganda."

The fund is dedicated to veterinarians in each of these countries keeping these animals well.  The Gorilla Run has people dress up in costumes while taking to the streets and keeping the  animals well on our minds,

Race Participant Joe Zeinner said, "So how hard is it to run in a gorilla suit?  It's not as hard as you think, and it's pretty fun, so it's worth it!"

Gorillas and other primates are fun and fascinating to watch.  But in addition to that, we all could learn a thing or two from these animals about shaping up for spring and improving our health.  They are some of the smartest animals in the world and there are probably two or three things they have every  day that could make a difference for all of us, when it comes to good health.

First up, hard to believe but we might benefit from the "gorilla diet."  Big gorillas, animals like gorillas, don't eat any meat.  It's one hundred percent vegetarian.  They eat about  300 different kinds of plants.

Second up, do you notice how they rarely sit still?  We could benefit from their activity levels, the way they hang around and climb and even search for food.

Finally, when was the last time you had a gorilla check up?  Zoo gorillas get them often.
