Medical Edge: I Have Wings

Updated: Friday, January 31 2014, 09:05 AM EST
EDGEWOOD, Ky. (Liz Bonis) -- A local organization called I Have Wings is looking to honor ten women who are breast cancer survivors.
Janet Chambers founded the I Have Wings Breast Cancer Foundation. "The wings in I Have Wings stands for 'with inspiration, no one goes solo'."
She knows how much that's needed, "I was diagnosed with breast cancer on my fortieth birthday."

Now more than a decade later, I Have Wings supports women who need everything from transportation, to mammograms and medical care, to direct phone lines. One was put in here at  the Saint Elizabeth Breast Center in Edgewood. "It was so women could get the results of their biopsies within 24 hours, because my biopsy took three days and that was the longest three days of my life."

As a way to continue that mission, they are looking for some very special people, survivors, and you can nominate them. Someone who is in treatment, going through it, completed it, but those who are now making a difference in inspiring others. "They are the wind under other women's wings."
When you have a diagnosis of breast cancer, as Terry Bogan a nurse navigator here knows, hearing about I Have Wings and other survivors makes a big difference in this journey. "It just helps newly diagnosed women to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I am gonna make it through and there's gonna be people to help me along the way."

Nominations need to be in by February 7th. Click the link for more information. Medical Edge: I Have Wings
