Medical Edge: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Updated: Friday, October 24 2014, 01:38 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Thousands are expected to come out to Kings Island the weekend of June 6th, 2014 for the annual Walk to Help Fund a Cure for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
For nearly a decade 14-year-old Delaney Walker has had big dreams of becoming an Irish dancer.  She's well on her way with practice sessions with her "dream team" are often three hours a day, seven days a week.

Delaney Walker said, "I love it, I love, I love it just because it's different, and you get to meet people from all over the world."

She does all this with something that gives her some unique challenges, she wears an insulin pump.  It is something that helps her better manage her blood sugars and that's because she was diagnosed with what's called Juvenile Diabetes.  The disease is also called Type One Diabetes and requires multiple blood tests each day.  Those sugar levels can swing high or low very quickly.

Melissa Newman said, "Probaby the biggest challenge for children living with Type One is the fear, it's something we don't like to talk about a lot."

Melissa Newman says  they'd rather just do something about it.  She is the Executive Director for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Delaney's "dream team" has raised 12,000 dollars for them to help fund a cure.

Friends say Delaney's spunk and spirit inspires them many days to keep going, "It does and it really gives you perspective," said 14-year-old Jesse Patton.
It also reminds all of us that old saying, the thousand mile journey begins with just one step.

That walk is Saturday morning at Kings Island.  You can still join in or support a team, CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.
