Medical Edge: Mind Camp

Updated: Friday, October 24 2014, 04:39 PM EDT
COVINGTON, Ky. (Liz Bonis) -- Dozens of local kids are getting exercise for their minds this summer. it's all part of Camp Carnegie at the Carnegie Theater in Covington.

It's not the kind of camp that likely comes to mind when you see the action here, but it's the mind that might be getting the most benefit.

"It's basically a six day program where the students come four hours a day going from the beginning to the end writing their scripts, rehearsing [and] making their costumes," says Alissa Paasch, the education director.

The creative process is what the students seem to enjoy most.

"I like to make costumes and work on my script," says 9-year-old Drew.

The theme this year? Pass it On.

One person can do something for someone else, and that energy can kind of spread, so if you think about it, you pass something positive and something positive spreads," says Paasch

Part of the benefit however may have to do with more than just learning that creatve process. Part of the thought is that kids often lose some of their academic strength through the summer, but this camp can build serious brain power.

That's exactly what Philip Bracke said happened for him each summer. After six seasons, not onlt does he have great memorization and writing skills, but he now wants to pursue theater as a career on Broadway.

Even if you don't want to pursue a stage career.

"Creativity is a part of their daily life, and will always be a part of their daily life whether they choose to be part of acting. Creativity and problem solving go on and on," says

Charity events, such as one called Suits the Rock, raise money to keep the cost of the program low and kids' confidence high.
