Medical Edge: Paddle boarding

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- A new program with Great Parks of Hamilton County allows people to get in the water without getting wet and get a great workout!

If the hardest part of any activity is getting started, the same may be true for stand up paddle boarding.

Neal Ramsey of Great Parks of Hamilton County said, "Kind of um, surfboarding, but a little easier."

Ramsey is an instructor for paddle boarding and he agreed to get first timer Cindy Rose up on a board.

Rose said, "I think I'll be OK.  I hope!"

Anybody with a bit of balance can stand up paddle board according to Kimberly Whitton of Great Parks of Hamilton County!

Whitton said, "If you are able to get on your knees and stand up and move your arms you are good to go."

It takes some coordination but it's a lot of fun!  And a few of the more experienced paddle boarders are quite inspiring.  The idea behind the workout is that a person can burn up to 500 calories an hour.  But in addition to paddling people have to stand and balance and that works core strength.
At the Great Parks of Hamilton County it's just $10 an hour to rent the board.

The feeling when a person finishes their session and doesn't flip?  Priceless.
