Medical Edge: Parkinson's disease surgery a success

Updated: Tuesday, July 15 2014, 05:24 PM EDT
FORT THOMAS, Ky. (Liz Bonis) -- A man from Fort Thomas invited the community to go "Putting for Parkinson's."

He was back into the swing of things thanks to a team at the Mayfield Clinic at UC Neuroscience Institute.  Seven months ago when Local 12 first met Scott Layman a walk down the hall was a challenge for him.  So he made the decision to undergo a procedure called deep brain stimulation.

Dr. George Mandybur, a neurosurgeon, said, "Deep brain stimulation is the precise implantation of electrodes deep inside the brain, to help remodulate the brain in patients with Parkinson's disease."

An electrical wire was placed into an area of the brain smaller than a peanut.

Dr. Mandybur continued, "The electricity goes to that area, that peanut size area in the brain, and it excites the brain cells."

The excitement was able to calm down Scott's Parkinson's symptoms much like medication.  Scott adjusted the stimulation through a control device.  As the symptoms got better Scott worked on his golf game.

He said, "I have to learn my game again.  It's a totally different swing now."

Scott will participate in "Putting for Parkinson's," a tournament which raises money for research.  To date they have raised over $75,000 and hope to raise about $100,000.

Scott Layman described his transformation after the surgery as a seven month miracle.  The only words he had to those who made it happen were, "Thank you. Just thank you."
