Medical Edge: Shop and Dine for women

Updated: Thursday, December 18 2014, 03:39 PM EST
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- All day at the Crestview Hills Town Center when a person buys or eats at participating vendors a portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation during the third annual 'Shop and Dine' day.

Jerry Smith of Dillards said, "We are donating to that cause, it's great!"

The money raised helps support women's health screenings such as those for heart disease and mammograms.  In addition to that it also helps fund something that's new in Kenton County Schools this year called 'My Heart Rocks.'  It focuses on fighting childhood obesity by the third grade; something our community and state, Jeanie Foley said, clearly needs.

Jeanie Foley of the St. Elizabeth Foundation said, "Kentucky is higher than the national average when it comes to obesity rates.  I think we rank about 37.1 percent higher than the national average.  And I just read a stat last week that one third of the kindergarteners going into the Boone County are listed as overweight or obese."

Screenings for women at the event will be conducted in mobile health units.  They will be available from 1p.m. to 7p.m on August 7th, 2014.  Those passionate about providing them said they can help fight some serious women's health concerns.

Debra Henley said, "There are, like, 2.8 million women across the US that have been touched by breast cancer.  And there are more than 8 million women who have some type of heart and vascular situation."

So if people need an excuse to go shopping, just look for signs in the windows of participating vendors if you want to shop or dine with those who donate.
