Medical Edge: Winter wilderness programs

Updated: Monday, January 13 2014, 08:52 AM EST
WINTON WOODS, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- If this winter weather has taught us nothing else these last few weeks, it's that we need to be prepared. If you need a little help doing that, Great Parks of Hamilton County has several programs coming up to teach the importance of the rules of three.

Sometime in the last few weeks you likely felt the chill of the wind, the frigid temperatures or maybe even the loss of power due to this wild winter weather. It's part of the reason winter wilderness expert Rick Wheeler, an adventure outpost manager, and Jen Hilbertan, outdoor program coordinator for the University of the Great Outdoors, say we need to be prepared. "We teach a variety of wilderness skills, everything you need to survive out in the wild, we hope."

So they admit that most of us aren't spending our time learning these things these days, and they teach what maybe all of us should learn and know.

They started with how to start a fire, as you can see patience is key. And then got into the important things we all need to know for survival. "In survival we talk about the rules of three, 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food and eve about three months without hope in extreme isolation."

Even rescue signs are in groups of three Rick says, "whether it's three gun shots, and SOS is three long, three short,  three long."

He also then showed us rustic shelters and a snare set up in the woods. Warmth, shelter, and food gathering he says are critical to your survival. "Well, if you are in the wrong setting, they could keep you alive."

Several of these winter wilderness programs are scheduled in the weeks to come. They are as little as 3 dollars a person.
