Reds Fans Wear Purple For Alzheimer's

Updated: Tuesday, September 3 2013, 09:46 AM EDT
Hundreds of people will be yelling "Go Reds" next week while wearing purple.  They are all part of a team, supporting those who have family members and friends with alzheimer's disease.
Medical Reporter Liz Bonis shares details in today's Medical Edge.

It is often referred to as the long goodbye. If you are living with a family member who has alzheimers disease, you often feel that you are very alone, but hundreds will gather here at GABP to let us all know we are not alone, and more importantly, there is an organization that wants to support you.

That organization is the Alzheimer's Association. Krista Powers is their development director.

"The Reds have partnered with us this year, and we are thrilled to have our first annual Alzheimer's Awareness evening on September 3."

Krista and Doug Custer met us at the ballpark to share a little more of Doug's story.

"Both my mother and father were diagnosed with alzheimer's."
Doug brought along some pictures of his parents and family and says he does understand why they often refer to this disease as the long goodbye.

"It's an erosion of the person that you know, and it's really hard to watch frankly.  The person you know slowly slips away and you see signs here and there that bring back memory of that person, but they slowly slip away, so that's a good description of it."

"In the Tri-State now, there are 55-thousand individuals who are affected and then there's a whole circle of family caregivers around them who are impacted with this disease."

So, cheer on the Reds, but remember to wear purple, the color associated with alzheimer's awareness.

"We are looking forward to a lot of purple throughout the stadium that evening."

"We hope to see a big crowd, and we hope they all dress in purple."
