"Choosing Wisely" study says you should think twice about certain endocrine tests
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - You may want to reconsider a few tests for your child according to a new report.
The AAP has released a new list on Monday of certain medical procedures or tests about which it says doctors and patients should think twice.
It's all part of a campaign that helps provide educational information to families called “Choosing Wisely.”
The list focuses on certain endocrine or hormone related tests for children commonly ordered when a parent is concerned a child is too short or overweight.
Some of the tests recommended for reconsideration include hormone tests for early hair growth or body odor, screening tests to detect chronic diseases when children are shorter but otherwise healthy, routine Vitamin D screening in children who are overweight or obese, thyroid or insulin level tests in children with obesity and routine thyroid ultrasounds.
Health care providers say some of these tests waste health care dollars and the benefit won't outweigh the risk or change how a child should be treated.
Choosing Wisely is an initiative that partners with several organizations that want to help people make informed healthcare choices.
