Devastating effects of “toxic stress”
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Toxic Stress is a severe form of stress that happens when a child doesn’t have an emotionally nurturing adult, and they also go through traumatic life events.
Examples are abuse, a parent’s drug addiction, and living in poverty. If they don’t have support, pediatricians and psychologist says toxic stress happens, and it can impact them for the rest of their lives.
They say it can cause severe behavior short term, and long-term lead to things like suicide, criminal acts, jail time, etc.
Veronica Meadows talked to a pediatrician about toxic stress and the impacts it can have on kids and local communities, spoke to a psychologist about treatment and methods she uses to help victims and she also talked to a family whose grandson is a toxic stress victim about the negative impact it’s had on their lives.
