Teen asks 9-year-old boy battling cancer to prom
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC / CNN Newsource / WKRC) - A teen in Virginia already has her date to the prom.
Kaelyn Brakefield is a junior at Midlothian High School and she asked a 9-year-old boy, Beckett Wyatt, who is battling cancer to go with her.
"I wanted to take Beckett because what if he never gets to?" Brakefield said with tears in her eyes.
She says she can't imagine someone never having the chance to go to prom.
"I want him to be able to do the things that I got to do," she said.
She learned of Beckett's story through her little sister, who is in Beckett's class.
"I've seen him run around, dance with kids he's never even met before. I can just imagine how much fun he will have with the older kids."
When asked, Beckett said 'yes' and his mother was overwhelmed with the news.
"It's special getting to see him getting to do those things but also no matter what comes, I'll have those memories with him," Kymmie Wyatt said.
When asked what he was going to do at prom, Beckett said, "There's the fruit punch bowl that I could shove her face in."
His parents wouldn't be surprised if this is not his last prom, but just his first.
"He truly believe s that he's got this and if anyone can beat this, it's him," Kymmie said.
Beckett has asked his parents to take exactly one million pictures of what is sure to be a memorable evening.
