College student dies after being hit in head with soccer ball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WKRC) - A University of Alabama freshman has died after weeks of being in a coma.
Allie Brodie, 18, was hit in the head with a soccer ball on October 7 while playing with her friends, according to the GoFundMe page set up to assist her family. She died on Saturday, October, 28.
After being hit with the ball, she suffered progressively worsening symptoms. Doctors decided she needed emergency surgery.
The surgery for intracranial hemorrhage required her to be put into a medically-induced coma.
This led doctors to a devastating discovery.
She had a condition known as brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM). It's a condition Allie has had since birth.
The trauma of being hit by the soccer ball combined with the AVM condition triggered internal bleeding in her brain stem.
