NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WKRC) - A police officer in Naperville, Illinois, is being credited with saving the life of a toddler who had wandered onto a highway, reports WBBM.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino said at first he thought the child was a stray dog while out on patrol. He realized it was a young boy though and got out of his vehicle to rescue him. He said as he yelled at the child, the child responded by getting closer to the traffic.

Mannino said the child lived about two blocks away from the road. He said the child's mother was with him before he ran out of the house and says he isn't calling the situation criminal. The mother showed up to the scene very emotional, according to Mannino.

Mannino was given a life-saving award for his quick response.
