Water park designed for individuals with special needs
SAN ANTONIO (WKRC) - A theme park in San Antonio is making a splash with its unique approach.
The water park includes a river boat adventure ride, five water play areas and waterproof wheelchairs.
Inspiration Island opened in June, 2017 as an expansion to Morgan's Wonderland, which has been open since 2010.
“Like Morgan’s Wonderland, Morgan’s Inspiration Island is not a special-needs park; it’s a park of inclusion,” said Gordon Hartman, founder of The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation.
Morgan’s Inspiration Island will be open daily throughout the summer until mid-August and then on weekends in August and September. Both parks are free to anyone with special needs.
The parks are inspired by Morgan Hartman, a young woman who is described as having the "ability to smile through physical and cognitive challenges."
Morgan's parents, Gordon and Maggie, had a vision for the park after a 2005 incident during which Morgan tried to play with other kids at hotel swimming pool. the other kids were hesitant to include her.
The completely wheelchair-accessible park features more than 25 elements including rides, playgrounds and other colorful attractions.
Morgan’s Wonderland has welcomed more than 1 million guests from all 50 states and 65 countries through park participation and special events.
It's mission statement reads:
To provide a safe, clean and beautiful environment free of physical and economic barriers that all individuals – regardless of age, special need or disability – can come to and enjoy.
