Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for their first interview since announcing their engagement on Monday.

Turns out - it was a set up.

A mutual friend thought the two would hit it off. After two dates - the pair couldn't get enough.

"It was definitely a set up," explained Markle of their initial encounter last July.

"It was a blind date."

“It’s so interesting because we talk about it now and even then because I’m from the States you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family," Markle said. "So while I now understand very clearly there’s a global interest there, I didn’t know much about him."

Markle only had one question for their mutual friend - is he nice?

"Because if he wasn’t kind, it didn’t seem like it would make sense. So we went and we met for a drink and very quickly into that we said, what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again,” the actress said.

Fast forward a few weeks later, they were camping out together in the African nation of Botswana.

"Then, we were really by ourselves," Prince Harry explained. "We spent about five days out there which was absolutely fantastic. So then we were really by ourselves which was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other.”

The couple discussed how they've dealt with being together while the world has their eyes on them.

"I tried to warn you as much as possible but I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction after the first five or six months," the Prince said.

"I think I can very safely say as naive as it sounds now having gone through this learning curve in the past year and a half I did not have any understanding of just what it would be like," Markle said.

When asked whether she was ready for what was to come, Markle implied that she was and that she saw her relationship with Harry as a "new chapter" in her life.

"I don't see it as giving anything up, I just see it as a change," Markle said. "It's a new chapter."

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Markle was leaving USA Network's "Suits" after seven seasons. Markle says that it was the right time to leave.

"I've been working on my show for seven years. We are very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series," Markle said. "And for me, once we hit the 100 episode mark I thought you know what I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work I've done there. Now it's time to work as a team with you (in reference to Prince Harry)."

The Prince had never watched Markle's show before they met.

"I had never watched ‘Suits’ and I had never heard of Meghan before and I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her," Harry said." There she was sitting there and I was like, okay I really have to up my game. I’ve got to sit down and make sure I have a good chat.”

Markle revealed her relationship with Prince Harry for the first time publicly in October. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Markle simply said "we're a couple."

“We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story,” she explained.
