The website chicagonow.com says the order of St. Patrick, established in 1783, selected blue as its color. The website for the Christian Science Monitor says green evolved into the color of St. Patrick's day because Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. Also, shamrocks, an important symbol in Ireland, are green and green was color used by several Irish revolutionary groups.
