On this date in 1963, the Hula Hoop was patented. The toy was already a big hit. History.com says Wham-O started to sell the hip-swiveling toy in 1958, and 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in its first four months of production. Wham-O is the same company that had released the Frisbee a year before the Hula Hoop in 1957, but Wham-O didn't start out as a toy company.
What was the first product sold by Wham-O?
The answer is: 1. slingshots
The same company responsible for the Hula Hoop, Frisbee and Slip 'n' Slide started out making slingshots. According to history.com, in 1948, Wham-O was founded by friends Arthur Melin and Richard Knerr. The company sold slingshots they created to shoot meat up to hunting falcons. The website says the name, Wham-O, came from the sound of slingshots. The company then sold Boomerangs and other sporting goods. Its first hit toy was the Frisbee in 1957.
