Is it time to ban the word bossy?
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Is it time to ban the word "bossy"?
A new campaign spearheaded by Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In Foundation aims to do just that. Sandberg, who is Facebook's chief operating officer, says the word "bossy" hurts girls' confidence and discourages them from becoming leaders. She has enlisted the help of Hollywood stars like Beyonce, Jennifer Garner and Jane Lynch, as well as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and others.
Here is how the campaign's website explains it:
When a little boy asserts himself, he's called a leader. Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded bossy. Words like bossy send a message: don't raise your hand or speak up. By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys -- a trend that continues into adulthood. Together we can encourage girls to lead.
