1949- The USSR explodes its first atomic bomb.
1954- San Francisco's International Airport opens.
1957- US Congress passes Civil Rights Act of 1957.
2005- Hurricane Katrina devastates the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. The Mississippi Gulf Coast is hit especially hard. Katrina causes more than 115 billion dollars in damage.
2008- Senator John McCain announces Alaska Governor Sarah Palins as his vice presidential running mate for election as U.S. President.
