1803- Lewis and Clark begin their expedition out west.

1888- Jack The Ripper's first confirmed victim, Mary Ann Nichols, is murdered.  She was found stabbed to death at 42 years old.

1897- Thomas Edison patents the Kinetoscope, the first movie projector.

1920- The first radio news program is broadcast by IMK in Detroit, Michigan.

1954- US Census Bureau is established.

1964- President Lyndon Johnson signs Food Stamp Act as Public Law 88-525.

1997- Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in a car crash in Paris along with a companion and the driver of her car.

2009- The Walt Disney Company agrees to buy Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion dollars.
