On This Day in history:

1922- The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed.

1940- California's first freeway is officially opened.

1948- "Kiss Me Kate" opens in New York City.

1953- The first color TV goes on sale.  It retailed for about $1,175.

1970- Paul McCartney sues the other three Beatles to dissolve the partnership and gain control of his interest.

1978- The Ohio State University fires Woody Hayes as its football coach after Hayes punches a Clemson University player.

1980- "The Wonderful World of Disney" is cancelled by NBC after more than 25 years.  It was the longest running series in prime-time TV history.
