1885- The roller coaster is patented by L.A. Thompson.

1953- Dwight D. Eisenhower takes the oath of office as President of the United States.

1961- John F. Kennedy is sworn in as the 35th President of the United States.  He said his famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you-- ask what you can do for your country."

1981- Iran releases 52 American hostages that had been held for 444 days.

1982- Ozzy Osborne bites the head off a bat in Des. Moines and was hospitalized to undergo a series of rabies shots.

1986- The US observes the first federal holiday in honor of slain civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr.

1997- Bill Clinton is sworn is for his second term as President of the United States.
