1861- Mississippi secedes from the United States.

1913- Richard Nixon is born in Yorba Linda, California.

1936- The US Army adopts the semi-automatic rifle.

1979- A benefit concert called "A Gift of Song" is held at the United Nations General Assembly in NY.  Performers included Olivia Newton-John, Rita Coolidge, the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, Abba and Earth, Wind & Fire.

1986- Kodak got out of the instant camera business after ten years because a judge ruled Kodak copied Polaroid patents.

2007- Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveils the iPhone.
