1789- The U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs is renamed the Department of State.

1928- The antibiotic penicillin is discovered by Alexander Fleming in mold called Penicillium notatum.

1949- "The Lone Ranger" premiers on ABC.

1965- "Lost In Space" premiers on CBS.

1977- The Rolling Stones release "Love You Live."

1978- Leon Spinks is defeated by Muhammad Ali in his third World Heavyweight  Boxing title.

1982- "USA Today" publishes it's first issue.
