1935- A hurricane hits the Florida Keys and kills 423 people.
1945- Vietnam declares its independence forming the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
1955- The very first Waffle House opened in Avondale Estates, Georgia.
1965- The Beatles release, "Yesterday."
1969- NBC-TV cancels "Star Trek". The show debuted on September 8, 1966.
1985- It is announced that the "Titanic" had been found on September 1. The luxury liner had been missing for 73 years.
1986- Cathy Evelyn Smith is sentenced to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Her sentence is in connection with the overdose death of John Belushi.
