1925- The first issue of "The New Yorker" is published.

1965- Malcolm X is assassinated in New York City at the age of 39.

1970- The Jackson 5 make their TV debut on "American Bandstand."

SATURDAY:

1860- Organized baseball's first game is played in San Francisco.

1885- The Washington Monument is officially dedicated in Washington, DC.  It opens to the public in 1889.

1968- Genesis releases their first single, "The Silent Sun."

SUNDAY:

1861- Texas becomes the 7th state to secede from the Union.

1896- The Tootsie Roll is introduced by Leo Hirshfiled.
