Pug picks fight with SWAT team during standoff

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Derek Drake) -- After a man barricaded himself inside a west Phoenix, Ariz. home, the Phoenix Police Department's S.W.A.T. team was called in, along with some K-9 units.

One of those K-9 units, along with a few members of the S.W.A.T. team had to deal with an unruly Pug before making any moves on the target home.

The ornery pug crossed the police barrier and ran straight at the K-9 officer, picking, possibly, one of the most one-sided territorial battles caught on camera.

The family who owns the pug, Champ, said they were prepared to say goodbye, knowing the little dog was causing a big distraction, and possibly putting the officers in danger. Janice Chacone, who owns Champ, said, "I told my kids, you know, if he gets shot, that's within the police officer's duty because they have to protect themselves."

"I kept thinking to myself, 'I would never forgive myself if our dog ran off, became the cause of one of the officers to die because they were distracted,'" Chacone told ABC15 Arizona.

The tense, four-hour stand-off ended when the armed robbery suspect took his own life inside the home. The suspect had just robbed a Subway restaurant at gunpoint before taking a cab back to his home.
