Emmy Award Found in Trash

Updated: Tuesday, December 10 2013, 01:55 PM EST
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CBS News) -- A Brooklyn man found a gold statue in the trash and took it home not knowing it was actually an Emmy award.

Ismael Cecik, who found the Emmy, says the Emmy trophy he found in the garbage deserves to be with its rightful owner.

Cecik says he was walking in front of a home just a few houses away from his on 28th Avenue in Bensonhurst, when he spotted the golden statuette in a box piled with other trash.

He had no idea what he was holding on to until he saw the Emmy awards on CBS.

The problem in finding the owner is that the trophy, believed to be from the 50s, was missing the band on its base saying whom the Emmy went to.

Cekic even tried talking to families around where he found the Emmy to see if they had any clue who the award might belong to.

So for now he will be holding on to the Emmy until the rightful owner can be found.

While some famous Emmys have gone for thousands on the auction block, the statuettes are not meant to be sold according to Emmy officials.

Emmy rules require a winner who no longer wants the award to return it to the National Academy of Television Arts and Science.Emmy Award Found in Trash
